We as educators talk a lot about student voice on social media. We are always concerned with two things, do our students have a voice and are they practicing “digital” citizenship?
We often spend so much time talking about if there is a voice, yet we do not talk about what we want when we use our voice. What is our goal when we do things like protest, write letters, or use our voice to some extent?
We need to have these types of discussions so that when people use their voice, they do so in a socially responsible way that enhances their goal.
We need to push the social issue discussions and start making the uncomfortable conversations more common, but in doing so we must also teach how we most effectively use our voices to achieve the goals we want through our voices.
